The basics of non-invasive ventilation (NIV) for JMS

This short module was developed at Monash Health by Monash Doctors Education in collaboration with key units. It was designed at the beginning of the COVID19 pandemic when it was not clear what role NIV might have in the treatment of COVID patients. Non-Invasive Ventilation (NIV) is complex and this module will be useful long term for medical staff who are working with patients that require NIV.

It's designed to provide you with some practice at:

  • Knowing the commonly used terms in NIV and understanding the relationship between these
  • Explaining how NIV improves respiratory function
  • Knowing when to choose CPAP or BPAP in patients who require NIV
  • Explaining how to commence NIV

Included are some materials and links to NIV resources that you may find useful.

It will take about 20 minutes to complete the 16 questions and is based on a typical case scenario.

The correct answer will appear after you attempt each question, and there are multiple links to more detailed information for you to either view or download on your device.
